Interview with Evan Taylor Jones

For readers who haven’t heard your music, how would you describe your sound?
My sound (I feel) is a genuine blend of classic rock n’ roll with a whole lot of soul. It is rooted that way because that is the music that I grew up listening to. To paint an even better picture, my music sounds like a hybrid between Lenny Kravitz and Richie Havens.

Growing up and throughout your career, who have been your musical inspirations?
Growing up, my musical inspirations were Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder; really anyone in the classic soul/motown era.

When did you first realise you wanted to pursue music? Where did your passion begin?
I first realised that I wanted to pursue music at the age of 19, my senior year in high school after nursing an injury that happened while playing for my school’s basketball team. I needed a “pick me up” because at the time, I was not able to do any physical activity and so my Father bought me a guitar and the rest is history.

How long have you been performing?
I have been performing now for 6 years.

So far, where has been your favourite place to perform?
My favorite place to play so far is Zoe’s Coffee shop in Gastonia North Carolina. I love that place and the intimate vibe. Anything goes there and though it isn’t the biggest room, people will sit/stand anywhere and listen politely, the entire time. They also make really good coffee and have a great eye for room design as it is such a cozy venue.

What was your inspiration behind the Sunray Sessions EP?
Regarding the Sunray Sessions EP, I wanted to shine a light on my favorite sounds and my favorite artist and the way they would spend time in a studio and record. A lot of the music that I enjoy (classic rock and soul) was recorded live and/or on tape and for hours on end until the artist or producer was genuinely satisfied. With this project, I did no less. I had my gang and I in the studio for 14 hours straight; one live room and two hired engineers. We did a total of 36 takes for a recording of 6 tracks and came out with what I feel is my best work yet.
