First question for those who haven’t heard your music, could you tell us about yourself and your musical style?
Music is my life. It’s the only thing I’m good at, that’s how I want to introduce myself to anyone who doesn’t know me. My name is Kendall Lake and music is my life. I would say my style of music is rock/pop I guess, but I think it’s hard for me to be put in a box personally. I don’t makes songs based off of genres, I base it off feeling, I need music to move me. I just hope it moves other people as much.
Is there anything in particular that drove you to become a musician? Or was there maybe a particular event in your past where you thought ‘I really want to do this for the rest of my life’?
It took me a very long time to feel comfortable in taking my passion for singing and songwriting and turning it into a career. For so long I never wanted to sing in front of people because I loved singing so much I couldn’t handle someone potentially not enjoying it. It literally took a good friend of mine dragging me into the studio for me to record anything. Even after that, it took several friends of mine to convince me to do it professionally. I wrote my first song five years ago, I’m still getting used to my life doing music, it’s scary putting your whole life in a song. But this is what I love so I’m happy. I don’t need anyone’s approval or appreciation anymore to do what I love. I think that’s the only way I can truly do this for rest of my life.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I’m influenced by so many people and musical artists, it’s helped me to not put myself in a box when expressing myself through my music. My parents raised me on everyone from Grace Jones and Josephine Baker to Björk and Madonna. I feel like that’s really shaped me as a person and comes out in my songs. I really enjoy using various instruments, sounds, drum patterns, effects and synths to tell my story.
Where would you like to be in five years?
In five years I would like to be touring the world performing my music. Performing live is my favorite thing to do, it’s my ultimate dream to be able to travel the world singing. I can honestly say I am the happiest when I’m on stage. I’m not sure if that’s normal, but when I’m writing and singing these crazy sad songs it’s the only time I really feel like I’m being myself.
What was the inspiration behind your song Rolling Stone?
Rolling Stone came from a long drunken night at a friends house thinking about my life, as I find myself a lot of time. I was talking to my friend about the choices we make and twists and turns that happen in our lives. For the first time in a while I was making peace with where I was and really realized I’m where I wanted to be, for better or worse. All my recent material is about this self reflective phase I’m in right now. Rolling Stone in particular is me not feeling sorry for myself while also understanding my mistakes. It’s one of my favorite songs and I’m really excited for people to hear it, I think it’s a song everyone can relate to who can look at themselves and think “this is the life I chose”?
