Heart 2 Heart by Fake Shark

Heart 2 Heart is the new single from indie synth-pop trio Fake Shark. The band themselves have made a planned change to their music since tweaking their name, described as a reinforcement of their musical centre. Because of that, they have been working on a new LP which will be released on the 26th of May. This single, the lead from the project, is a reflective look back at a narrative of friendship and a night of some serious partying.

What first struck me about this track was the soft airy vocals of the lead singer. After a few phrases a cold metallic effect was then introduced to the melody, which then took full effect in the chorus. I thought the dulled down introduction of the effect was a great way of easing listeners into the quirky sound, but found the effect itself too strong in the chorus. It was difficult to understand what the lyrics were, and therefore difficult to connect with certain ideas in the track. The underlying music was very pop, but there were a few little intriguing sounds in the mix that gave the song the extra pizzazz it needed. A small build up to the third chorus was demonstrated but not enough to make the track stand out. Possibly stripping the first chorus back might have made the track’s crescendo stronger.

Even though Fake Shark are going for an accessible pop sound, they put their own little original touches on this tune. I think there are still a few aspects they need to work on, something that may be present on their upcoming LP. I give the track 7.5/10.
