The Soul R Sessions is a live performance contest for soul musicians that gives artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and original tunes for a chance to win a recording session. This time around, the artists performed at The Reservior in Paris on the 11th and 15th of April, as well as the semifinals on the 8th and 9th of May. Finally, on the 30th of May (a Tuesday) the grand final will take place where the winner will be selected. The minds behind the contest release playlists every fortnight, a sneak peak of what you can expect at the concert, so I had a listen to see who got through to the finals and who might win.
Audrey Crapwood was the first artist that I took notice of. She had a great, smooth blues voice in her track Bad to the Bones. The next voice that stood out to me was Nerina Lune with Métisse, her rap was fierce! Hantcha’s track Ndao Andeha employed great vocal harmonies, and Yannick Claire had a smooth funky and classic vibe. Djayan had a great, low, sultry vocal tone, and Shaun’s unique voice in It Hurts So Bad presented as rounded and strong. Shaî’s Ma Vibe was super groovy with so many layers making the track rich in texture.
There were so many great artists on the list it was quite difficult to choose one, but if I had to it would be Shaun. You could just hear the soul oozing from his vocal performance. However, I am not the judge, you are! Go have a listen to the artists and vote for your favourite!
