Constellations is the latest single from English singer-songwriter Sam Lyon. Released on the 13th, its acoustic sound is a common denominator in Lyon’s music. She lists some of her influences as Taylor Swift, Lewis Watson and Tom Odell, big names in the singer-songwriter genre. This single begins with arpeggios in the guitar and some echoey synth sounds. In the video, Lyon appears on a hillside with a constellation on her back. As she travels through town, she gets some pretty judgey looks from passers-by as she searches for the person with the same mark. At around the halfway point, the music picks up. The guitars play a consistent strumming pattern and the drums a set up a driving beat, as Lyon begins to run through a dark forest. I was impressed by her unique voice throughout the song, that had a strong higher register and slow vibrato. My only critique was of the transition between the first half and the instrumental section, I thought it could have been a bit smoother than it was.
Overall I really enjoyed this single. Lyon certainly has her sound figured out, and I can’t wait to hear more from her. I give the track 9.5/10.
