This week we’re winding back the clock to 2002 with Nelly’s massive hit single Hot In Herre. If you haven’t heard this groovy tune, you must either live under a rock or be a newborn child since this track was everywhere and still pops up on the radio today. Reaching number three in the ARIA charts and Billboard’s 2002 Hot 100 Singles Chart, the song was extremely successful for the rap/hip-hop artist.
The track itself uses samples from three different tracks including Bustin’ Loose by Chuck Brown, As Tears Go By from Nancy Sinatra, and Neil Young’s There’s A World. However, the stand out feature is the bass/chord combo, with a staccato bass note followed by a syncopated keyboard chord. This paired with the expert production skills of The Neptunes, there was really no going wrong. I know for myself (being one of those dreaded nineties kids), this song will forever be one of the classics of my generation.
