Since pop music began, women have been powerful players in the industry. With artists such as Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé who could argue against women making up a powerful percentage of the industry? I’ve decided to rank some of these great female artists based on their compositional and creative skills, vocal and instrumental ability, and their stage presence to find the best of the best.
This woman has been in the pop industry for longer than most, staying current by reinventing herself and her sound every decade. She may not have the most versatile voice but to stay in the game this long when some artists can only manage to become one-hit-wonders, Madonna deserves a place in my top ten.
9. Etta James
This powerhouse was behind one of the most classic love ballads of all time: At Last. Not to mention she also paved the way for other African-American artists in a time of racism and inequality, this lady was truly one of the greats.
8. Aretha Franklin
Also in my Top Ten Pop Artists of All Time, she arguably has the most powerful voice of her era. With hits such as Respect and Think, this soul-singer truly deserves a place in the history books.
7. Delta Goodrem
At the ripe old age of 17, this Australian artist burst onto the ARIA charts with her debut album Innocent Eyes. Since then she has produced four studio albums and acquired herself a big red chair on The Voice Australia. She may not be well-known overseas but this woman was instrumental in shaping many young Australian artists’ lives and sounds. Not to mention her piano skills are NUTS.
6. Kelly Clarkson
After winning American Idol, this young artist got herself a bunch of number one hits and Grammy awards for her outstanding efforts in the industry. Her voice is unique and versatile and she really deserves her spot in my top ten.
5. Whitney Houston
This multi-talented woman wasn’t just a singer, but an actress, producer and model. With so many activities on her résumé, it would be difficult to ignore Houston’s creativity.
4. Christina Aguilera
Xtina undoubtedly has the greatest voice of this generation. Beginning as a starlet in the television show The Mickey Mouse Club, she rose to fame with her debut album and has continued to wow her audiences with her vocal prowess.
3. Alicia Keys
Getting the third spot on my list is soul singer Alicia Keys. This woman is an extremely gifted song-writer and pianist, not to mention her songs are quite difficult for almost anyone but her to sing.
Listen to her song Highly Strung. She could seriously challenge Jimi Hendrix himself.
This woman has a multi-million dollar empire. She’s a writer, singer, producer and actress. Her performances attract thousands of people. Every. Single. Time. She takes the number one spot.
